Out of curiosity, how many points do owners purchase? I bought 210 at SSR to start and then added on 100 at BLT and Grand Cal.

100 points is a good start. That gets about 1 week in a studio. Or 1 week in a studio at the more expensive points per night places like Bay Lake Towers. (Or a Sunday to Friday stay which is cheaper.)

It was once suggested to me that if I wanted to rent points on a more secure basis I could purchase a tiny resale contract and then I'd be a DVC member.

Then when I rented points instead of relying on the other party to make a reservation, I could have verification that those rented points were now mine (in this case it's considered transferred points). It would make the transaction of renting points less risky. I would know right away if I was scammed and I would know for sure (direct from member services to my own ears) that I truly had a valid reservation.

This way I would usually have the ability to get points at about $9 or $10 per point. Possibly the highest would be $13 per point. And I would have complete control over the room reservation process.

The only real downside to this scheme is that it is not a good way to get truly distressed points or distressed reservations. Those points usually can not be transferred because they're reserved from a holding account or had been banked and are about to expire. Banked and points from the holding account can't be transferred. They have to just be used. And that's when you can find the $5 per point bargains.

It's still much "cheaper" to pay $10 per point and stay in the DVC accommodations than it would be to pay disney reservations directly for the DVC accomodation. But at $5 to $8 per point it's actually as cheap or cheaper than a value resort. The only real catch is that at $10 per point, a 1 bedroom still really isn't that family friendly (they're better set up for a couple) and it's still probably close to $200 per night. I'm not going to do a risky transaction that ends up in the $2500 range. That's too much.

DVC is not really as good of a deal as the DVC evangelists say it is because the DVC rental market is still cheaper than buying your own points. And they don't reward last minute reservations. Disney actually has the audacity to say to you "we're sorry but Old Key West is sold out to DVC point holders", but if you pay $300 per night cash then you can stay there. It's complete and utter B.S. It's not a good deal because the only stuff that is left when most people plan out their vacation (3 months ahead of time), is saratoga springs.

But over the long haul, it's a good deal. A studio DVC room through a DVC purchase costs about as much as a typical value resort. So, you can stay deluxe at the price of value. But it's still a big up front purchase for the privelege of paying maintenance fees. And it's not as flexible as making a room only reservation with money.

I'm not sure. But I think a small contract would be at minimum 25 points. Also, what would the purchase price be on something like that? Probably about $90 per point.

A quick internet search reveals that there's a 25 point contract (Animal Kingdom) for sale at $90 per point ($2250). 70 points at Old Key West for $71 per point = $4970 (or just under $5000) (this contract is only through 2042 though; way less years than other contracts (it's the oldest property)).

You could borrow and bank points to get 75 of your own points to use at a time and you could "rent" points from other owners looking to transfer points out. 100 points gets a studio for between 5 nights and 7 nights. For example, for DVC the cheapest weeks are in Jan, Sep, and 1st half of December. It's only 69 points for an entire week in a bad view animal kingdom lodge studio. (But that's never available.) Realistically, Saratoga Springs is always available. A studio for 1 week during the cheapest time of year is 95 points or 102 points for 1 week during the next cheapest time.

Also, there's a listing out there for 150 point contract (at Vero Beach home resort) for $60 per point = $9000.

Basically, you could outlay a $2250 purchase price for the privilege of paying membership maintenance fees (but pretty low at $125 ish per year). And this would allow you to be a member and be able to get points transferred into your account.
As of right now, there are offers from people to transfer points for about $7 to $10 per point. People like transferring points to other owners because it's a one time shot and it is much less hassle for the seller and more re-assurance for the buyer.

But there's a lot of catches when receiving transferred points. Those points will come with all different caveat expiration dates or holding account status.
