There will NOT be free trick or treat a.k.a, Happy Haunting at Downtown Disney this year. The event was getting too popular and without turnstiles to control the crowds it was determined it was no longer a good guest experience. We went years ago and it was nice but in recent years it was overwhelmed.
Was this just halloween night oct 31? That's not really the best crowd level to be visiting... So, it's not much of a loss to the savvy low crowd level chooser or vacation times. But it's an example of bad optics: Cancel the actually free candy, but if you want to pay nearly $60 you can go to MNSSHP.
Not that I have a real opinion one way or the other on the actual cancellation.
My opinion is to go in early October or right now!! You can see MNSSHP if you want, or just catch the special fireworks for free from fort wilderness, TTC area, or Poynesian. (Or even from the bay lake towers, which wouldn't be free).
Too bad that they've cancelled it. But that's certainly better than having a bad experience for guests. Like no candy for some people, or bad candy, or huge unsafe crowds.
Rumor is that there is informal trick or treating at fort wilderness campground where people at actual campsites have some candy and it was reported to be fun. But that's a total shot in the dark because it depends on who is staying there and whether it just crops up spontaneously.
